Artists

Félix Mula was born in Maputo in 1979.

He has Visual Arts and pedagogic training from the National School of Visual Arts, Maputo. He is also trained in Visual Arts by the Visual Arts College of Reunion Island. He exhibits regularly in Mozambique and on Reunion.

He currently works as a lecturer at the Instituto Superior de Artes e Cultura (ISArC) in Maputo.

gemuce

Gemuce was born in Quelimane in 1963. He graduated in 1980 from the Institute of Fine Arts of Kiev, Ukrainia.

In 1993, he obtained his masters degree in Mural Painting from the Academy of Fine Arts of Kiev and in 2001 he completed a Master in Conception, Decision and Management of Cultural Projects from the FCP3 University, Sorbonne Nouvelle, France.

Gemuce taught at the National School of Visual Arts (ENAV) in Maputo.

He is currently lectures in the Visual Arts Course at Instituto Superior de Artes e Cultura (ISArC) in Maputo and his work is represented in various collections in and outside of Mozambique.

Gemuce expresses himself mainly through painting in oil, acrylic, watercolor, collage and mixed media techniques.

Govane

Govane was born in 1960.

In 1971, at the age of 17, he started dreaming about making his own sculpture. In subsequent years he realized his dream and began sculpting. In 1975 and 1977 he has two exhibitions in commemoration of national Independence Day, Sponsored by MORFEU, the firm he was working for,

After doing his military service, he dedicates himself fully to sculpture. In 1982, he became a member of the “Núcleo de Arte” in Maputo. He is known s Govane, name given to him when he was born, coming from his grandfather.

He uses wood for his sculptures, often working pieces of dead wood to create faces and figures.

Lately, he has created his sculptures from stone.

GRANT FOTO

Graduated with a degree in journalism from the University of Nebraska in 1987. He has worked professionally as a copywriter, a cinema projectionist, freelance photographer and film-maker. He travelled extensively in Africa and worked for five years as a freelance photographer in London before establishing himself in Mozambique.

In 2000 he worked as the Press Secretary for the Second Johannesburg Biennale.

In 2002, he co-curated, co-edited the catalogue, and produced a short conceptual ambient video for “Ilumindo Vidas, Mozambican Photography 1950-2001, Ricardo Rangel & the Next Generation.”

In 2006 he was appointed Executive commissioner of PhotoFesta Maputo III. The third Encontros Internacionais de Fotografia featured 18 national, International and thematic exhibitions with th theme of “Dinámicas Urbanas”

In 2007 Brazil’s Minitério de Relações Exteriores, sponsored his participation in Foto Rio. In 2008 he was contracted as na advisor for the (american) Association of Public Health Laboratories, a strategic partner for CDC/PEPFAR in Mozambique as photojournalist.

He lives and works in Maputo and Catembe.

Exhibitions:

1993 – with Ricardo Rangel, he held his first photographic exhibition “Spirit of Survival”, at the Association of Mozambique Photography in Maputo.

“spirit of Survival” toured Nampula and Beira.

October 4, 1995 – Moçambique, Ópera da Paz – at the Centro de Estudos Brasileiros in Maputo. Documenting the peace process in Mozambique.

On the third anniversary of the signature of Mozambique´s General Peace Accord in Rome. Photographic installation and text by Malangatana

1996 – Life Goes On – multi-media exhibition presented in the Pretoria Art Museum.

hobjana

Boaventura Jorge Hobjana was born in 1958. He did a course on Small Scale Enterprise Management and a course on Electricity.

Self taught , he started his artistic career in 1988. He dedicates himself to painting and batik. In 1974, he participated in the theatre group “Club Lisboeta”, today known as “ Youth Club “Chai”. In 1995 he organized a course in batik for demobilized soldiers which culminated with an exhibition at the Mozambican Association of Photography.

He collaborated with the painter Malangatana in the Republic, the National Assembly and the Matalana Cultural Centre during the visit of the Portuguese President, Jorge Sampaio. Hojana is a founding member of the Airport Neighbourhood Cultural Association (ACBA) and a member of the Núcleo de Arte and the Matalana Cultural Centre. He is also a musician and singer. In 1985 he founded the musical group “Os Tigres”. His first public performance was in 1987, followed by others in various halls in Maputo, Matola and suburbs.
