Mário Macilau was born in recently independent Mozambique, during the most critical phase of the civil war. His family faced many financial difficulties and moved from Inhambane province to the capital Maputo in search of better living conditions. When Macilau was 10 years old he started working in a small supermarket where the clients were the medium and upper class for whom he washed cars in a parking lot and helped carrying their shopping bags.

Already as a child he became interested in photography. His career as professional photographer started in 2003 and was confirmed in 2007 when he exchanged his mother´s cellphone for his first camera.

MUTAPO POTTERY

PORCELAIN PIECES

Graduated from Michaelis School of Art in Cape Town, Marjorie Wallace is a talented ceramicist. She produces fine porcelain objects inspired by the traditional baskets that remind her of her youth, of which she scrapes, compresses and carves with drawings and linear designs. In a country where supply and resources are a constant problem, Marjorie Wallace opens her pottery to other ceramcists and trains young crafters.

1991 Created Mutapo Pottery.

Lives and works in Harare.

Inspired by her childhood memories on the tradition of basket-making, Marjorie Wallace creates ceramic pieces that imitate the woven quality of the baskets. A talented ceramicist, graduated from Michaelis School of Art in Cape Town, she works with ceramics for more than 23 years at her studio Motapo Pottery in Harare, Zimbabwe.

There she produces fine porcelain bowls inspired by traditional baskets. Each creation is scratched, compressed and carved with drawings and linear designs.

"I liked baskets from an early age. I have memories of the people that made them: how they sat, where they found the natural fibre and what they looked for when they found it. We had baskets hanging on the walls of our house and we used them", she states. "When I started decorating ceramics, I thought more and more about the baskets, how they looked and how they are woven. They are also containers. I saw my work as not being different to that of the basket makers."

She obtains the raw materials for her ceramics from the region. The kaolin comes from South Africa, the bentonite from Mozambique and feldspar and silica from Zimbabwe. The materials for the glazes are also obtained in the region.
